Languages Matter! : An exhibit on Philippine languages opens at the DLSU Learning Commons

On the 27th of May 2013, the Learning Commons joined the Linguistics Society of the Philippines (LSP) , Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) , Department of Education (DepEd) and the De La Salle University – College of Education , as they re-affirmed their commitment in promoting sustainable language development in the country by way of opening an exhibit on Philippine Languages.   Mr. Jason Griffiths describes the general status of Philippine languages today Mr. Jason Griffiths, the Director of SIL, introduced the nationwide scope of this fascinating exhibit, explaining how each color represents our language vitality. In the Philippines, the number of individual languages listed is 185. Of these, 181 are living and 4 are already extinct. He further noted that of the living languages, 43 are institutional, 70 are developing, 45 are vigorous, 13 are in trouble, and 10 are dying. The Peque Gallaga Collection formal turnover

Peque Gallaga browsing his life's work on display The Peque Gallaga Collection was formally turned over to De La Salle University in a short ceremony held on April 29, 2013 at the 13th floor of The Learning Commons. Mr. Maurice Ruiz de Luzuriaga Gallaga, popularly known as Peque Gallaga, a Lasallian and multi-awarded filmmaker, claimed of coming to full circle by donating his prized collection to the  DLSU Library. According to him, this is his way of going back and giving back to where everything started, i.e., to the Library, being his source of inspiration and passion. DLSU Libraries staff goes to Bataan

This year's Annual Planning Workshop and Team-building of the DLSU Libraries was held last April 19 and 20, 2013 at the White Corals Beach Resort in Morong, Bataan.  Organized and headed by the newly hired librarians, namely, R. Del Mundo, P. Molina and L. Narvaez, the group composed of 82 personnel gathered in front of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall and started the 3-hour ride going to the venue leaving at exactly 7:30 o’clock in the morning. While on the bus, the organizers facilitated fun games, namely: Bring Me, Name that Tune, and Charades. The group were divided into 3 teams (Green, White, and Yellow) and everyone actively participated. After hours of fun games, the group sang along with the bus’ on-board videoke until the destination was reached. Upon arriving, welcome drinks were served together with the breakfast meal. Yolanda Francisco Odsinada: a tribute

After thirty-five (35) years of intelligent and devoted service, Miss Yolanda Odsinada has retired from the De La Salle University Learning Commons effective 3 rd Term, AY 2012-2013. A graduate of University of the East, Yolly, as she is fondly called by friends and colleagues, started her work with The Learning Commons (then called the University Library) on August of 1972 as an Assistant Librarian at the Circulation Section.  In 1981 to 1989 she was appointed as the Periodicals Section Librarian where she worked on improving the services and  organization of collection of the said section .  She is responsible for increasing the visibility of the section both outside and in-campus.  During her term she was also able to accomplish the  DLSU Periodical Holdings List .

Tillett delivers her lecture A cademic librarians are getting ready for the implementation of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) in the Philippines by attending training workshops to equip them with basic knowledge and skills in organizing Filipiniana resources based on the new cataloging rules and principles. A total of 54 librarians, catalogers, and teachers of Cataloging courses attended a three-day "train-the-trainers" workshop on RDA held at the European Documentation Centre Multipurpose Room, The Learning Commons on 3-5 April 2013. The trainer's training was organized by the Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians (PAARL) in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-National Committee on Library and Information Services (NCCA-NCLIS) , the National Library of the Philippines , and the National Committee on Resource Description and Access (NCRDA) and its goal is to give a basic program for trainers ...

The Learning Commons prepares for 3rd term AY 2012-2013 finals

In anticipation to the research needs of the students for their forthcoming final examinations, The Learning Commons and the Br. Benedict Learning Resource Center (BBLRC) will have extended service hours on the following dates: Date Service Hours The Learning Commons BBLRC April 01-05, 8-12, 15-18 7:00AM to 9:00PM 8:00AM to 9:00PM April 06 and 13 (Saturdays) 7:30AM to 8:30PM 8:00AM to 8:30PM In light of this and the housekeeping activities that have to be performed in preparation for the opening of the new academic term, The Learning Commons and its satellite libraries will also be closed for visiting users from April 1 to April 28, 2013 .
