Human Library (Session 4): Prejudice Against Politicians



The fourth human library session in partnership with DLSU - Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance was held on January 21, 2016 at the Animo Labs, The Learning Commons. It focused on political aspirants, current politicians and celebrity-politicians. Mr. Antonio C. Pedro, Jr., Vice Chair of the Political Science Department made the opening remarks. Almost 100 students and faculty members attended the session to listen and interact to the following human books:



THE POLITICIAN, THE ATHLETE, THE NEWSCASTER

Arnold “Ali” Atienza earned his BS in Physics degree from the De La Salle University and his
master’s degree in Government Management from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. He first gained fame as the only gold medalist in the 1994 Asian Taekwondo Championships at the age of 21. Ali is also a former anchor of IBC Express Balita from 2004 to 2007. In 2010, he started following the steps of his father, Former Manila City Mayor Lito Atienza when he ran and won the barangay elections as a barangay captain in San Andres, Manila and in 2013, as councilor of the fifth district of Manila. MERYENDA'S NOT ENOUGH: MOVING BEYOND PERSONALITY-BASED POLITICS

Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” Sotto is the son of showbiz personalities Vic Sotto and Connie Reyes, and a kin to politicians Senator Vicente Sotto III and former senators Vicente Sotto and Filemon Sotto. True enough, both show business and politics run in his blood. Since 2012, he has been treasurer of CAN Television & Productions, Inc. For two years, he has served the Quezon City Council as Legislative Staff Officer V. At present, he is a project associate at the Ateneo School of Government, and in the coming 2016 Philippine Local Elections, he will run for City Councilor in the First District of Pasig City, under the platform of increasing the level and quality of people’s participation in governance.


KAGAWAD CARES

Mary Jane Lapuz earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. She has been Barangay Kagawad of Barangay U.P. Campus, 4th District, Quezon City for three consecutive terms now. Highlights of her years as Kagawad include the establishment of BUPC-TFYD Reading Center, 1% of IRA Funds for the Solo Parents of Barangay UP Campus Project, and BUPC-TFYD Scholarship Grant for College Students. Kagawad Jane is also chairman of Committee on Health, Women and Family and Committee on Youth and Sports Development of their barangay.



Dr. Francisco A. Magno, Director, Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance represented by Mr. Ian Jayson Heceta gave the closing remarks.

Upcoming Event: The Green Spine 2016 Forum: Access Made Easier

The Libraries will be holding The Green Spine 2016 Forum with the theme "Access Made Easier: Developing Collections in 4G Environment" on 20 January 2016 (Wednesday), 1:30 PM at the European Documentation Centre, Learning Commons, 13th floor, Henry Sy Sr. Hall.

This forum aims to (1) present the collection building efforts of the Libraries in today's 4G environment; (2) recognize the various quantitative techniques and  use them appropriately in collection assessment; (3) understand the perception and use of Web resources among library patrons; and, (4) promote the Libraries' services and programs.

Librarians, library administrators, faculty and students of Library and Information Science (LIS), and library volunteers are invited to participate in this forum. Slots are limited to 100 only, thus, interested participants are requested to pre-register online not later than 18 January 2016 (Monday) using this Electronic Form. Registration is free of charge, but on a first-come, first-served basis. Certificate of participation will be given to those who will attend this forum.

Upcoming Event: Minute to Win it!: The Green Spine Edition

As part of The Green Spine 2016, the Libraries will hold Minute to Win it! : The Green Spine Edition on 19-21 January 2016 at the ​Corazon C. Aquino Democratic Space, ​Ground Floor, ​Henry Sy, Sr. Hall. 

Based on the popular TV game show, contestants will have to complete a challenge in one minute to win. This activity aims to assess the users' general knowledge about the Libraries' collections and services through exciting time pressure games.

This contest is open to all bona-fide DLSU faculty and all students of DLSU Manila, MEC, and STC campuses. 

Mechanics:
  • Each contestant will draw one challenge from a bowl for him/her to accomplish.
  • Contestants who complete the challenge within 60 seconds or less will win a prize.
Interested participants may approach the Libraries' booth at the Green Spine Book Fair. Registration is not required.

Upcoming Event: bookFace Photo Contest: The Green Spine Edition




As part of the Green Spine Book Fair 2016, the Libraries will hold the bookFace Photo Contest: The Green Spine Edition on Wednesday, 20 January 2016, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This activity aims to showcase the DLSU students’ and faculty members’ creativity through the use of books as artistic objects, foster the love of reading and promote the library’s print collection and social media accounts.

Rules:
  • The contest is open to all bona-fide DLSU faculty and all students of DLSU Manila, MEC, and STC campuses.
  • The contest will be held on 20 January 2016 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • Individual and group entries will be accepted. Each individual/group is only allowed to submit one (1) entry. Interested participants may pre-register online not later than 15 January 2016 (Friday). Walk-in participants may also join this contest by registering at the Libraries’ Booth at the Green Spine Book Fair, Cory Aquino Democratic Space on the contest date from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
  • Submission of entry constitutes permission to use contestant’s name and entry for purposes of presentation, marketing and promotion without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law. All entries become property of the Libraries.

Mechanics:
  • The contestants will pick a book/s that has a human face and/or any body part in its cover. The book/s should be borrowed and checked out from the Libraries’ collection.
  • The contestants will snap a photo using the book cover/s to augment or obscure any part of his/her/their body/ies or face/s (examples can be viewed in this link).
  • To qualify, contestants shall:
    • “like” the Facebook page of the Libraries and “follow” LORA’s Twitter account
    • tweet the photo to @LORA_DLSULib using the hashtags #GreenSpine2016 and #TheGreenSpineBookFaceContest on 20 January 2016 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
    • send a scanned copy of the checkout transaction receipt of the book/s borrowed or a screenshot of the contestant’s MyLibrary account showing that the book/s is/are checked out to him/her
  • Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:  
    • Originality           25%
    • Creativity            25%
    • Presentation                 30%
    • Social Media Impact*    20%
*will be based on the entry’s recorded total number of likes on Facebook and number of favorites on Twitter until 20 January 2016 at 12 midnight. The Libraries will post all qualified entries on its Facebook page on the same day, 20 January 2016 at 5:00 PM.

Winners and Prizes:
  • The three entries with the highest scores will be declared winners and will receive the following prizes:
    • 1st prize: Php 1,500-worth The Store gift certificate
    • 2nd prize: Php 1,000-worth The Store gift certificate
    • 3rd  prize: Php 500-worth The Store gift certificate
  • The list of winners will be posted on the DLSU Libraries Newsette, Twitter, and Facebook page on 21 January 2016. Winners will be invited to attend the Green Spine 2016 Awarding Ceremonies on 21 January 2016 at 4:00 PM.

    • take a photo of their Green Spine poem in the designated photo booth
    • “like” the Facebook page of the Libraries and “follow” LORA’s Twitter account
    • tweet the photo to @LORA_DLSULib using the hashtags #GreenSpine2016 and #TheGreenSpinePoetryContest
  • Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:  
    • Message           30%
    • Creativity            25%
    • Originality                     25%
    • Social Media Impact*    20%
