Activate the Learners! : Gamified Information Literacy

As part of the IamInfoSMART campaign, the Libraries will be having a week-long IamInfoSMART Multimedia Exhibit with the theme “Activate The Learners!: Empowering InfoSMART Lasallians Through Engagement” on 10-14 November 2014, 8:00AM - 5:00PM, at the Exhibit Area of The Learning Commons, 6F Henry Sy, Sr. Hall. It is a week-long fair of exhibitions, learning sessions, and interactive games, which are all aimed at engaging student participation.

IamInfoSMART aims at honing students to become information literate (IL) by equipping them with the necessary IL skills and raising their awareness on the importance of IL in their pursuit for academic and research excellence.

The line-up of activities/fun games during the IamInfoSMART 2014 includes the following:

Begin Your Research Here! (Individual Game)
  • Using the online quiz, participants will answer a total of 15 questions, five each categories (Good Research Question; Find the Best Keywords; and Too Broad/Narrow/Just Right) in ten minutes.
  • Participants will earn one point for each correct answers.
  • Participants who earned 15 points will get a prize.
When: 10-14 November 2014

Open to all students and faculty members.
Let’s Cite It! (Individual Game)
  • Players spin the wheel to determine the types of library materials and citation styles.
  • A complete citation of selected type of sources will be given to the participants and he/she will arrange the citations according to selected citation style, i.e., APA, MLA, and Chicago in three minutes.
  • Players will earn one point for each correct citation.
  • Players who earned five points will get a prize.
When: 10-14 November 2014

Open to all students and faculty members.
Plagiarism Tic-Tac Toe (Individual Game)
  • Based on tic-tac toe game, players mark X or O on a square to launch a question.
  • Players will answer a question to win the square.
  • Incorrectly identify the citation and you lose the square.
  • Players must win all three rounds to win the game.
When: 10-14 November 2014

Open to all students and faculty members.
FunInfoLit (Group Game)
  • Players form teams of two: clue-giver and guesser.
  • A minimum of two teams is required to start the game.
  • The players select a clue-giving partner through the game.
  • Spread out the tiles near the human-sized easel. The tiles cover a wide variety of descriptive words, and are color coded to represent different kinds of descriptive words for quicker searching.
  • On their turn, each team selects one of the game’s cards which give a list of different information sources to be guessed by the other team member.
  • The clue-givers choose any one of the three words on the card, select word tiles for good descriptor, and place them on one of the easel’s three shelves, marked "Definitely", "Kind of" and "Not".
  • Guessers can start guessing as soon as the timer is flipped.
  • Clue-givers players cannot talk, make noises, or make charades-link signals.
  • Clue-givers can only respond to the guessers by playing more tiles.
  • If the clue-givers and the guessers are having too much trouble with a word, the former may skip to any other word on the card.
  • Each has three minutes to guess a word.
  • Each team who guessed a word correctly gets one point.
  • Each team takes a turn every round and the game lasts two rounds.
  • The team with the most points after two rounds is the winner.

InfoSMARTer’s Snakes and Ladders (Individual Game)
  • Players select their game pieces from the LIA avatars.
  • Players roll the die and mark off the number rolled starting on the “1” spot on the board.
  • Have the player roll the die. He/she then moves his game piece the number that he rolls on the die.
  • Continue this pattern until the game is over.
  • Move around the board in number order. Move from Space 1 to 2 to 3 and so on until the players reach Space 100.
  • If the piece lands exactly on a spot with the beginning of a ladder, players can move it up the ladder to the space where the ladder ends provided he/she answers the “Up/Down Question” correctly. If the answer is wrong, the players stay on a spot with the beginning of a ladder.
  • Move the piece down, to the space where the snake ends, if it lands at the beginning of a snake. Players can stay on the spot at the beginning of a snake if he/she answers the “Up/Down Question” correctly. Otherwise, his/her piece moves down.
  • Reach space 100 by exact roll and win the game.

DLSU Libraries Bluff: Student Edition (Group Game)
  • The DLSU Libraries Bluff (based on the TV game show Celebrity Bluff) is open to all bona-fide DLSU undergraduate students.
  • Interested participants should form a team of three and sign up. The ways to sign up: send an email to the library@dlsu.edu.ph; fill out the Online Registration Form; enlist at the Information Reference Desk at the 7th floor of the Learning Commons.
  • Registration starts on 27 October 2014 and will be closed as soon as the slots are filled in. (Limited slots only)
  • During the contest, each team will answer five (5) questions (10 points each) related to criteria for evaluating information sources.
  • The host will pick a bluffer for each question.
  • The host will read each question once which is projected in the screen.
  • After reading each question, the library bluffers will either help or trick the contestants by providing answers to the questions.
  • Each team has to decide whether library bluffer’s answer is a fact or a bluff.
  • The bluffers may give a brief explanation of their answers.

IamInfoSMART Amazing Race (Group Game)
  • The IamInfoSmart Amazing Race (based on the reality tv show The Amazing Race) is open to all bona-fide DLSU undergraduate students.
  • Interested participants should form a team of three and sign up. The ways to sign up: send an email to the library@dlsu.edu.ph; fill out the Online Registration Form; enlist at the Information Reference Desk at the 7th floor of the Learning Commons.
  • Registration starts on 27 October 2014 and will be closed as soon as the slots are filled in. (Limited slots only)
  • The official list of teams will be announced via email and via the Libraries’ social media sites. Participants will also receive an email notification regarding the details of the event.
  • During the race, there will be pit stop clues and challenges. Pit stops will include the different library areas such as the Cyber Space, Chill at the Fifth, American Corner, Discussion Rooms as well as the different sections.
  • Team members are to work together to solve each clue and successfully complete each task to be able to get the next clue to the next destination.
  • Each team must get a stamp at every pit stop.
  • The first team to reach the final pit stop
