Peñaflor Presents at the AL4 Conference

Green practices and sustainability in libraries was the underlying theme of the recently concluded two-day conference entitled  "Academic Librarian 4 - Sustainable Academic Libraries: Now and Beyond,” held on 2-3 June 2016 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong. Designed as a green conference, it focused on four major themes – sustainable environment, sustainable resources, sustainable technologies and sustainable services. Ms. Janice Peñaflor, Collection Development Librarian, was one of the speakers under the theme Sustainable Technologies with her presentation that tackles social media engagement entitled “Beyond ‘Likes’: an assessment of user engagement in Facebook among Philippine academic libraries.”

The Academic Librarian Conference series was conceived and initiated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (AL1 and AL3) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (AL2). This year, the AL4 was jointly hosted by the two universities and was held as part of HKUST’s 25th anniversary. Over 300 professionals from all over the globe had come over to participate in this event at attend several plenary and parallel sessions.

Keynote speakers include Madeleine Charney, Research & Liaison Services Librarian, University of Massachusetts Amherst/Coordinator, SustainRT: Libraries Fostering Resilient Communities of the American Library Association (Theme 1. Sustainable Environment); Helen Hockx Yu, Director, Global Web Services, Internet Archive (Theme 2: Sustainable Resources); John Helmer, Executive Director, Orbis Cascade Alliance (In Theme 3: Sustainable Technologies) and lastly, Andy Priestner, Director, Andy Priestner Training & Consulting (Theme 4: Sustainable Services).
