A Well-Attended Human Library Session 6
The DLSU Libraries held its sixth session of the Human Library on 08 December 2016 (Thursday), 1:00PM-4:00PM at the Learning Commons. This session covered human books on the following subjects: bisexual, hunk and fashion designer librarians, Lasallian brother, person with deformity, person with depressive disorder, queer lovers, scholar, student athlete, and senior citizen call center agent.
Dr. Aime T. Guarino, Director of Office of Counseling and Career Services (OCCS) gave the opening remarks. Mr. Joseph Yap, Chair of the Human Library introduced the 11 human books. The descriptions below were prepared by Ms. Roselle Maestro, Readers’ Services Librarian.
The hunk librarian, Mr. Edward Vincent Guevarra, is a former athlete, fitness instructor, nutrition and sports enthusiast. He trains to inspire and motivate people to live a healthy and happy life. All of these he does while being a full time librarian at the Ateneo de Manila University Rizal Library.
Ms. Tiffany de la Cruz is currently taking up AB Philosophy and BS Legal Management at the De La Salle University. She is an apprentice at the DLSU Harlequin Theater Guild and the general manager of AT: The Vape Shop. While leading a normal life as a student and a young entrepreneur, she is suffering from Major Depressive Disorder, Panic Disorder, and has been seen signs of Bipolar Disorder.
Mr. Thomas Bienvenida is one of the members of the pioneer batch of the Vaugirard Scholarship Program. He is currently taking up Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. In AY 2015-2016, he was the President of the Lasallian Scholars Society, the sole organization for undergraduate scholars of DLSU under the Office of Admissions and Scholarships.
At a young age, Ms. Kriemhilda Talavera found comfort and solace to printed volumes. Books were her friends; they were her mates until she eventually got a family of her own. Her fascination to the world of knowledge and information has not yet found a full stop as she still thirst for advancement. She is a graduate student in Fine Arts major in Literature. Her abilities are on display in the pieces of literature she wrote and on her being a BPO customer service representative.
Mr. Ernani Agulto is always on the lookout for professional and personal development. Upon earning his bachelor’s degree from the Philippine Normal University in 2013, he took up a certificate course in Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue under the sponsorship of the United Nations and Athabasca University in 2015. Now working as a licensed teacher-librarian at San Beda College Alabang, he is, at the same time, pursuing his inclination in Fashion Design as a student of Fashion Design and Marketing at the SoFA Design Institute under a full-scholarship program. During the recently-concluded Manila Fashion Festival Design, he was one of the finalists at the BOBSON Japan’s #RedefineDenim Design Competition.
Br. Mark Salvan FSC, is a Lasallian brother. He studied in La Salle since kinder, ended up being a Brother. He is now working harder to be a better teacher.
Queer lovers Mr. Paolo Aguas and Ms. Heart Diño met at Tinder. Paolo is a Reports Analyst for AFDigital while Heart is an Actuarial Analyst in Manulife. It took Paolo three tries before Heart finally said “Yes” to their first date at the Promenade in Greenhills. Paolo was in awe when he first saw Heart as her beauty was all that he could see. After a rocky first date, Paolo and Heart started going out more and the rest is history.
In 2013, Ms. Ana Alexandra Castro earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and graduated Cum Laude at the University of the Philippines Diliman. At present, she is completing her second degree at the UP College of Law. While she excels academically, she has also worn and is wearing many hats as an officer and member of various student organizations. To name a few, she served as the University Student Council Chairperson (2013-2014), League of College Councils Convener (2012-2013), MagKaisa CSSP Chairperson (2011-2012), and UP Law Debate and Moot Court Team Member. A self-confessed bisexual, she was the founder and coordinator of the Proud to be LGBT Campaign.
Ms. Ian Lariba has made a name for herself as the first ever table tennis Olympian from the Philippines. Before her stint at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she had consistently emerged in her sports, being undefeated in her five-year UAAP career . She was Season 74 Rookie of the Year, Seasons 75, 77, 78 Most Valuable Player, and Seasons 77 and 78 Athlete of the Year. Apart from being the team captain of the DLSU Table Tennis, this pride of the Green Archers is a Dean’s Lister and a Gawad Mag-aaral Awardee, taking up Bachelor of Science in Management of Financial Institutions.
During her undergraduate years at the University of Santo Tomas, Ms. Kayla Juanzo was one of the top performing students. At present, she is taking up her master’s degree at the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies, specializing in Law Librarianship. She is a librarian and a 21st century educator honing Ateneo High School students into globally competent and media and information literate individuals. As such, she is the current moderator of the Ateneo de Manila Junior High School Loyola Book Club. Her other talents include dancing and writing. Her credentials merit her as an achiever consistently bordering on excellence. Though, there are two things that make her peculiar above all of which: she has Christ at the center of her life - passionately serving Him, and she was born with no hands.
Ms. Heart Diño gave a response on behalf of all the human books. A total of 47 readers attended the session with 89% of them as first time attendee. Almost 98% respondents said that they would love to be participating as readers again in the next sessions to come. Ms. Donna Labangon, Co-Chair of the Human Library ended the event with closing remarks.
