DLSU librarians elected as officers of PAARL

The De La Salle University (DLSU) Learning Commons is proud to have two of its librarians,   Ms. Marian S. Ramos-Eclevia   (Associate Librarian, Information Reference Section) and   Mr. Jorge Erwin A. Rada   (Librarian, Periodicals Section), to have been elected as Board members and officers of  Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL). They were inducted Vice-President and Board of Director of the Association, respectively.   The induction of elected officers   coincided with the   40 th   General Assembly of PAARL which was   held last 25 January 2013, at the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Aurora Blvd., Quezon City. PAARL  is an association of librarians from different schools that supports scholarly researches and/or formal education on the collegiate level and above. Upcoming event: MOA signing with Task Force Detainees of the Philippines

The DLSU Library and the DLSU-Dasmariñas Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo have partnered with the  Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP),  a human rights organization, advocating and supporting social structures and actions that promote human rights nationally and globally, on the digitization of its primary sources of information (mostly Martial Law documents). Through this, the two libraries will be allowed to keep copies and provide access to the digitized documents. The MOA signing is scheduled on January 29, 2013 at exactly 10:00 AM, to be held at Multi-Purpose Room of the European Documentation Centre, 13th floor of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall.  The invitation and the program to the said event can be viewed below:

Mobile augmented reality in the Library

Printed materials with this logo have AR T he Learning Commons now uses Augmented Reality (AR), which provides easy and interactive access to information concerning the library and its resources. AR is a type of virtual reality that combines a view of the real world with computer generated objects to augment the scene with additional information. Initially, AR is being used with The Learning Commons’ printed subject guides/pathfinders. What it does is to link users to the online version of the subject guides/pathfinders as well as to the web videos included in the list of sources. AR also allows posting and sharing of comments and suggestions through Twitter and Facebook.

Santiago, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Services, in partnership with the American Corner-Manila, organized an on-the-spot poster making contest on 19 January 2013, held at the 13 th floor of the Learning Commons. Themed as Befriend Nature for A Bright Future: Kaibiganin ang Kalikasan para sa Magandang Kinabukasan , the contest aimed to impress in the minds of Filipino children the love for Mother Nature and the important role they play in nurturing nature.

The event was graced by Ms. Corazon Nera, Chairman, Board for Librarians (BFL), and was attended by members of ASLP and librarians from DLSU. Ms. Yani Ramos-Eclevia Marian Ramos Eclevia (aka Yani) is back to where she first started her career as a licensed librarian about twelve years ago- De La Salle University Library. She is now one of the associate librarians at the Information-Reference of The Learning Commons. Same with many other librarians in the field, Library and Information Science is not Yani's first choice. During her younger years, she dreamt of becoming a bank manager, a farmer, or a Math teacher. But fate has taken its course to make this resilient person into an innovative and proactive reference librarian of her generation. It was during her stint in DLSU Archives when she finally decided to fall in love with librarianship as she placed 7th in the Librarians Licensure Examination 2000. Smithsonian Institution team visits American Corner-Manila

The U.S. Department of State, as a part of its public diplomacy strategy, manages a wide network of American Spaces across the globe, which now sums up to about 850 diverse spaces (i.e., in terms of sizes, audience, partners and quality of collections, services, programs and physical set-up). With an eventful three year-career at DLSU and having been speaker to various seminars and trainings for librarians, the Permanency Board approved the permanent position of Joseph Yap beginning Term 2 of AY 2012-2013.  In 2010, Joseph joined De La Salle University as a Catalog Librarian. July of the same year, he was assigned at the Graduate School of Business, Makati Extension Campus (MEC). The MEC Library caters to the graduate students and faculty members of program Masters in Business Administration, Juris-Doctor Degree (MBA/JD). The collection of the library spans from management, economics, marketing, finance, accounting, statistics and law.   Early in his career, he served as the Information Resource Officer of the Asian Collaborative Training Network for Malaria (ACTMalaria) in 2006.  He was in-charge of the ACTMalaria Information Resource Center (AIRC) and was an active member of Medical and Health Librarians Association of the Philippines (MAHLAP) and became its P
