Mobile augmented reality in the Library

The Learning Commons now uses Augmented Reality (AR), which provides easy and interactive access to information concerning the library and its resources.

AR is a type of virtual reality that combines a view of the real world with computer generated objects to augment the scene with additional information. Initially, AR is being used with The Learning Commons’ printed subject guides/pathfinders. What it does is to link users to the online version of the subject guides/pathfinders as well as to the web videos included in the list of sources. AR also allows posting and sharing of comments and suggestions through Twitter and Facebook.

To try and experience using AR, patrons need to download and install LAYAR (application available for free at Apple AppStore and Android Google Play) in their mobile devices. Please note that the LAYAR application is Internet dependent. Mobile carrier data charges may also apply.

To view the AR content, follow these three simple steps: (1) Open LAYAR application; (2) Point the device to the object embedded with AR; and, (3) Press scan. When LAYAR is done scanning, the digital content of the object will automatically appear.
